Green Party opposes Unitary Status

“A Bad Day for Democracy”

Following last week’s announcement that Wiltshire County Council's bid for unitary status has been successful, Salisbury Green Party has expressed its disappointed at the decision and consequent demise of Salisbury District Council.

Unitary status means that the four Wiltshire district councils and Wiltshire County Council will amalgamate into one new Council providing services to communities across the county from Cricklade to Downton.

“The new authority will be far too remote from people living in South Wiltshire”, said Sue Wright, local Green Party coordinator.

“It seems as though practically all our public services are now to be run from the other side of Salisbury Plain and the consequence is that when people in Salisbury have problems they may well find themselves talking to a council representative with as much local knowledge as someone in Carlisle or Mumbai. The combination of district councils into one super-authority seems designed only to reduce local democracy and accountability. The formation of a Wiltshire unitary authority will be a bad day for democracy.”
